The Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF) provides an overview of national and local public health measures, intended to serve as a guidance for health authorities.
Following a consultation launched in early 2019, the prescribing of LARC has been included among the recommended new indicators within the PHOF. The benchmarking tool is intended to support transparency and accountability, and is reviewed every 3 years, with the newest iteration taking effect 2019/20.
The indicator will measure “Total prescribed long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) (excluding injection) rate per 1,000 females aged 15-44”. This aligns to the PHE’s Public Health Dashboard on sexual and reproductive health indicators.
