In July 2019, the NICE Guideline on LARC [CG30] was updated to reflect the changes in commissioning and provision of contraception in England.
The key changes to NICE guidelines on LARC are as follows:
- A footnote has been added to 1.1 Contraception and principles of care to clarify that “The MHRA issued a Drug Safety Update in January 2016 highlighting that levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine systems should always be prescribed by brand name because products have different indications, durations of use, and introducers”.
- All of the method-specific recommendations have been removed, and an implementation resource summary is now provided instead which includes links to “up to date, relevant and valid information” to support the guideline.
- The ‘LARC selection algorithm’ has been omitted from the updated guideline.
